About the Author
Professor Andrew Crane is the George R. Gardiner Professor of Business Ethics and Director, Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business, in the Schulich School of Business at York University in Canada. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham and a BSc from the University of Warwick. He has over ten years' experience of teaching and researching business ethics, and has spoken and published widely on the subject. Journals in which his work has been published include the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, and Organization Studies. Professor Dirk Matten is Hewlett-Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility in the Schulich School of Business at York University in Canada. The jurisdiction of secular courts (more willing to use torture than ecclesiastical officials), weak central authority (as in the regions of the Holy Roman Empire), the two Reformations of the period, and elite belief in diabolism seem to have been central factors. In the last chapter, several extremely interesting linkages are suggested between the persecution of witches and the rapid growth of colonialism, with its concomitant slaughter and enslavement of indigenous populations on several continents.
