One of the most inspiring books that you will ever read. I first read this book eight years ago when I met Travis Roy at a speaking engagement and he gave me a copy of it. It is a poignant reminder of how much more powerful the human spirit is over any adversity that we face in life. Travis and I have traveled very similar paths both suffering disabilities in our freshman year of college, a year a part, and both sharing the same philosophies in that eventually we find a way that makes all things possible and a positive attitude will take you further in life than any other skill you can have. That and cultivating an attitude of gratitude is the best medicine. If you want to feel inspired, uplifted and grateful for all you have, no matter what you are facing, then this book is a must read!

I have read many stories of "inspiring" people with spinal cord injuries, but never one as honest and emotionally open as this one. Roy shares not only the medical details of his injury, but his deepest feelings about what happened to him; and how he continues to deal with it on a day to day basis.Instead of just giving uplifting blather about having a relentlessly positive attitude, he admits to bouts of self-pity; he talks about how other "well meaning" but patronizing people sometimes make him feel. It gave me a lot of insight into the difficult life of a quadriplegic, and definitely made me want to reach out more when I see someone in a wheelchair, and not to treat them as if they are invisible, which is often what happens in our society.I had read another book called [I think], "Miracles Happen," by Brooke Ellison, who was rendered a ventilator dependent quadriplegic at age 11, and went on to graduate from Harvard. While I found Ellison very inspiring, her sugar-coated, surface description of her life and emotions somehow left me cold. In contrast to that, Travis Roy lays it all out there: everything he was and is thinking and feeling, whether or not those thoughts and feelings were "admirable."He even talks about how awkward it is to be an "inspring" celebrity just by virtue of breaking his neck; and how he'd trade places any time with a normally abled anonymous person.This is a fast read, and I would highly recommend it.

Living in NH, my family was privy to the rise of Travis Roy. Our television antenna received Maine stations and we became familiar with his local fame. We felt pride for his accomplishments in receiving a place with the Boston University hockey team. I can still remember the heart sinking moment when I flicked on the news the night after his accident. That eleven seconds was played and re-played over and over again. As a parent, tears of empathy streamed down my face as Travis' dad made his way onto the ice.Travis recently came to speak at my son's high school. The audience was riveted by this young man who had found his way from tragedy to triumph. The love of his family had become a pivotal point in his struggle to maintain dignity, courage and strength. I was humbled that my son was given the opportunity to bear witness to such inspiration. This whole experience struck home when my dear friend's son would suffer a similar fate.Standing on the edge of beautiful Lake Geneva, less than 24 hours into his semester abroad, this 20 year old boy would dive into shallow water and hit bottom. His head struck with such force that he shattered C6 and rose to the water's surface as a quadraplegic.My husband and I have read Eleven Seconds to gain perspective in understanding "the new normal", as my friend puts it. The astronomical health costs and consideration to life time care. It is a daunting process that literally becomes a full time job. Travis allows insight to all aspects to the world of quadraplegia. He is completely forthcoming and generously honest. This gives the reader front seat vision to his journey. Something as simple as drawing a breath of air and clearing your throat becomes an obstacle to conquer. Amazing grace.I recommend this book to anyone who suffers internal conflict. We are all given opportunity to make choices, good and bad, everyday. Therefore, each day is ripe with possibility. Eleven Seconds provokes the reader to look inside his/her own heart and realize its power. Make each day count.

Missed an opportunity to hear Travis speak at a fundraiser held at work (so bummed!). So, I bought the book to find out more about his story. It was fantastic -- and I'm not a hockey fan. What a wonderful man! How courageous!

My daughter loved this book

A remarkably honest story about a young man's tragedy and how he dealt with it. I wanted there to be a happy ending; in many ways it was but there are some heart wrenching realities that Travis will have to face head-on for the rest of his life. It's a book that will encourage you to evaluate your own life and what you should be grateful for. It's the little things in life that Travis Roy makes you realize are important. He is an inspiration!

Wanted to let readers know that there's an Afterward that's been added to the latest edition of Eleven Seconds (10/1/05) that's terrific. In it Travis updates us on his condition, his lifestyle, his reaction to Christopher Reeves' death, his belief in the importance of stem cell research, and the continued support and love of his family. It's an uplifting, insightful, and hopeful addition to this inspirational book.

I'm a huge hockey fan & I just started reading this book as my summer reading assignment for school. I just started it the other day & I'm in love with it. Only on Chapter 3 & I love it. Highly recommend for huge hockey fans & players!

Written from an infantryman's perspective, this memoir of the Rhodesian Bush War takes the reader from intake to demobilization in a way that academic texts cannot replicate. The writer is no literature professor or other detached intellectual - he's was a grunt, a ground pounder, an Infantryman in one of the finest light infantry outfits in modern history. His accounts take the reader right down into the action, with no glorification or Hollywood style drama.This is an episode of history that more people could stand to read about, most especially for the facts surrounding the fall of Rhodesia, and the culpability of the west in helping the Communists to topple the last of the western style democracies in Africa.

In the introduction, it is claimed that Chris Cocks' FireForce was to the Rhodesian Bush War as All Quiet on the Western Front is to World War I. At first I dismissed this statement as self-boasting, however I was to find this was actually an accurate comparison. Both are well written, amazing, tragic stories of war as witnessed through the eyes of a young soldier.Now I myself have served 4 years in the US Regular Army- Active Duty. My service included a 12 month tour of duty in South Korea, and a 12 month deployment to Ramadi, Iraq, and I am currently serving in the Army National Guard. With this being so, I felt I could easily connect with the author's stories. His description of military life mirrors my own experiences in many respects (not talking about the intense close quarters combat the author described of course!). If this book was to be read by someone with no military experience, they may have difficulty understanding various military jargon and what not, but I doubt this would prevent one from enjoying the book none-the-less.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the recent past in regards to the decolonization of Africa, the oft forgotten Rhodesian Bush War, or just interested in the counter-insurgency tactics employed by the RLI, tactics described greatly within the book and tactics that are studied today by American commanders in Afghanistan and elsewhere.I feel this book should be more popular then it already is, as I can't find any faults with it. It is neither outright pro-, nor anti-war, and written well enough to be enjoyed by all.

I bought this book because a Rhodesian friend of mine fought against the rebels in this war and I wanted to learn something about it. I'm not sure it would be as interesting to one who has no hint of personal connection to that conflict. It's sort of like reading the author's diary of what happened to him and his various sticks in the hundreds of actions in which he took part, almost daily, over several years. It includes not only details of his personal involvement and reactions, but also a lot of information about the military situation as he knew it in various parts of the country, as well as the names and stories of other soldiers who fought alongside him, and too often died. You watch him go from an untried young recruit, to an experienced fighter, to battle-weary soldier who finally only wants to be done. It's a look from the inside at both the bravery and the brutality that soldiers experience.

I, like most Americans, knew almost nothing of the Bush War that marked the end of Rhodesia and the beginning of Zimbabwe. But here you will find a moving account of what one man experienced in that conflict.Obviously Chris Cocks is not an author, and the editors, at least of the kindle version haven't done him any proofreading favors. But overlook that and you'll find a man with something to say on war, life and coming of age in the most brutal way possible. Full of interesting characters and amusing stories, Cocks also tells us about man's inhumanity to his fellow man, on both sides.This isn't a romantic adventure story. You'll come away torn at how much you like and at the same time disapprove of these men. But their fight for their country, even if we in the West disowned it, even if the fundamental principles it was built on were unjust, is compelling reading for anyone.

The good and the bad. The author tells about atrocities committed on both sides. You do get the feeling that the guerrillas committed the atrocities as a simple matter of policy, while the Rhodesian (RLI) for the most part tried to avoid them ( except for a few unstable individuals). This was a question I had been asking myself. As usual, it was the poor innocent people in the middle who took the brunt from both sides.The bad is that the typos are so bad that whole words ore often gibberish. Anyone who has not studied foreign languages (where it is common to compensate for unknown words) might have a rough time with this text. It was literally so bad, that I had to treat it as nearly a foreign language sometimes just try for context. On the other hand, if you fight through it, you will be rewarded with an honest account of what really went on among all the massive current propaganda about the war (ie. The idea that the guerrillas were gallant freedom fighters, or that the Rhodesian armed forces were aethical, etc).Recommended if you can get through all the typos.
