About the Author
Bryan Kolb received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University in 1973. He conducted postdoctoral work at the University of Western Ontario and the Montreal Neurological Institute.He moved to the University of Lethbridge in 1976, where he is currently Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and holds a Board of Governor's Chair in Neuroscience. His current research examines how neurons of the cerebral cortex change in response to various factors, including hormones, experience, psychoactive drugs, neurotrophins, and injury, and how these changes are related to behavior in the normal and diseased brain. Kolb is a Killam Fellow (Canada Council) and a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Royal Society of Canada. He is a recipient of the Hebb Prize from CPA and from the Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour, and Cognitive Science (CSBBCS) and is a former president of the CSBBCS. He is one of the theme leaders in the Canadian Stroke Network. He is an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia and University of Calgary, as well as the Hotchkiss Brain Institute in Calgary, Alberta.Ian Q. Whishaw received his Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario in 1971.He moved to the University of Lethbridge in 1970, where he is currently Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and holds a Board of Governor's Chair in Neuroscience. At last I've found the fundamental textbook in the neurosciences that really does cover the fundamentals. This is an advanced undergraduate level text that assumes little in the way of prerequisites, although courses in biology and psychology undoubtedly would be helpful. The text is clear and well-written, while at the same time avoiding the pitfall of being dumbed down for the reader.Coverage is comprehensive, with coverage of neurological and psychiatric disorders and neuropsychological testing which was absent from other neuroscience texts I have read to date. Each chapter begins with a clinical vignette and concludes with a summary of the key points of that chapter. The art program is mixed: some diagrams, especially the schematic diagrams, do an excellent job of explicating and expanding upon the textual content. The imaging data, too, is very helpful. Other diagrams, however, the photos in particular, do little more than repeat the information in the text. I suppose this is to assist those with a visual learning style, but they seemed superfluous to this reader.This readable and accessible text is highly recommended, especially as a starting point for those interested in the fascinating subject of neuroscience. I've finally found the five-star introductory text I've been seeking. What had been murky from reading more advanced texts has now become much more clear.
The subject of this book is daunting but the authors manage to be not only clear but even entertaining. It reads almost like a conversation. They make sure that the reader is. never lost. The first part is an easy to follow review of basic concepts on neurophysiology. The second part is more clinical but without reaching the pedantry of other texts. A great book to consult often.
A wonderful text that I had a prior version back in 1994 in neuropsyc as a course textbook. Enjoyed it at the time and enjoy the updated version now as a general reference, and interesting read for those days when I want to review fundamentals from it.The illustrations were/are strong with cases and descriptions that assist in the understanding of core concepts. I do agree with others in that an earlier version would be just as fine of you are keen to save a few dollars in this purchase.As a huge fan of memory and memory research this book is one I do find myself looking at from time to time, even years (and years) after graduation.
This book is an excellent reference on neuropsychology. I am a graduate student in neuroscience and I was pleasantly surprised to note that this book was very thorough in its discussion of different topics. My research concerns aspects of activity in the temporal lobe and the authors have discussed some of the cutting edge literature.This book is definitely a cut above the normal neuroscience textbooks.The authors have clearly taken the time to go through the literature and pick out interesting papers and placed them in a quick and readable manner. I would recommend this book to any student of systems neuroscience for a good introduction to the fascinating aspects of brain function. In fact I would go as far as saying that this book is an ideal companion to the now dated bible of neuroscience (Kandel, Schwartz and Jessel).
Great interesting and through textbook that conveys the fundamentals of neuropsychology in an easy to digest manner.
This is a heavy book with lots of information packed in it! Everything is written in an interesting way, with verbal descriptions and often, with visual depictions. It helped me to understand terms,how the brain is structured, functions, how it is affected by brain injuries and disorders, and how certain diseases and injuries are affected by the brain. A really good text!
